After expressing strong resentment on the curtailed upcoming session of the Goa Legislative Assembly, Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao on Tuesday wrote a letter to Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar demanding to convene an urgent meeting of the Business Advisory Committee (BAC).
“I request you to convene an urgent meeting of the BAC to discuss the duration of the Third Session of the Eighth Legislative Assembly to be further extended to two to three weeks and the schedule for tabling the Legislative Assembly Questions which is now scheduled on December 26-28, 2022, (the days are part of the annual Christmas & New Year Festivities) to be further extended,” Alemao said.
He further requested to ensure that Opposition MLAs are given equal opportunity and enough time to raise, participate and discuss various issues of public importance by way of Legislative Assembly Questions, Zero Hour Mentions, and Calling Attention effectively only for three days as the first day of the session is allotted to the address of the Governor.
In his letter, he also raised apprehensions that the restriction to table only three Starred Questions per day and 15 Unstarred Questions per day will deprive the MLAs of raising questions of public importance.
Obsession to promoting commercial events affecting local culture: Yuri

Asserting that Goa's identity is being destroyed by the BJP government in the last 10 years, Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao has said that obsession for event management and promoting commercial events has affected local art, culture and traditions.
He said authorities are harassing local traditional organisers but give full liberty to foreigners for rave parties.
The Opposition leader has strongly demanded that the Chief Minister immediately give sound relaxation to all the local traditional, cultural and social events organised during the festivals.
“It is most unfortunate that events of foreigners are welcomed with red carpet in Goa, but traditional Christmas and New Year dances are facing restrictions from the government. I hope better sense will prevail and the government will stop the harassment to locals," Yuri said.
He demanded that the government must issue a notification for sound relaxation immediately so that the local organisers get enough time to make preparations and inform their well-wishers and annual participants in advance.
“Goa has already lost its original identity. The government must wake up to protect our traditions, culture and heritage. The tourism Department must stop working on the Jetty policy and focus on Goan cultural tourism," Yuri said.
