Former CM Pratapsing Rane on Friday said the cooperative sector in Goa, as compared to Maharashtra, is still young and needs upliftment without any political interference.
Rane was addressing a function organised by the Goa State Cooperative Union in collaboration with Sattari Urban Cooperative Credit Society at Kanekar hall in Valpoi.
“The Cooperative sector is a key factor in the all round development of society, specially in the financial weaker section. Cooperative societies along with state-level banks which work under the cooperative movements are facing difficult times due to demonetisation and cashless system imposed on them. As a result, the common man has had to suffer because of the system,” Rane said.
Chairman of Goa State Cooperative Union Uday Prabhu criticised political interference in the cooperative sector, adding that many societies would have a difficult future.
He also criticised a former cooperative minister for diverting cooperative development fund for the education sector because of a rivalry with one of his opponents.
“Such political interference should not be allowed in the cooperative sector,” said Prabhu and also complained that the cooperative department had been turning a blind eye to many issues affecting them.
Valpoi Municipal Council Chairperson Parveen Shaikh, Cooperative Officer Satish Sawant, Chairman of Sattari Urban Credit Cooperative Society Yashwant Gawas, former deputy speaker Narhari haldankar and ZP member Premananad Hazare Fati Gaonkar also spoke on the occasion.
Four societies -- Parvateshwar Milk Producers, Gowardhan Milk Producer (Bhuipal), Sattari Urban Credit Cooperative Society and Sattari Urban Credit Co-Operative Society -- which contributed significantly in the sector were felicitated.
