If plans take off, the River Navigation Department’s maritime school at Britona run by the Captain of Ports could begin offering degree courses in the near future.
Captain of Ports James Braganza has written to the State government underscoring the need to begin maritime degree courses and his department is currently drawing up plans to upgrade the infrastructure at the institute located on the banks of the Mandovi at Britona.
Currently, the maritime school conducts short and long-term courses imparting skills for inland vessels only.
The CoP department’s public-private participation division is drawing up plans and bid documents for redeveloping the institute and Braganza is proposing a level of upgradation adequate for it to conduct internationally recognized degree courses.
In his written communique to the State government, Braganza has said that the proposed institute must follow international best practices aimed at providing maritime education on par with the best international institutes.
There is a need to start maritime degree courses in Goa to cater to bright students, Braganza said in his communication to the State government.
