PANAJI: The Goa Police have decided to launch a week-long special drive against drunken driving from March 5-11.
The police has launched this drive in a bid to prevent road accidents and save lives.
The Deputy Superintendent of Police of Traffic Headquarters Dharmesh Angle has issued orders to all traffic police to conduct special drives at various junctions across the state using the alcometers available with them.
The police have earlier launched many such drives in 2018 and violators were issued challans and many driving licences were confiscated and forwarded to the assistant director of transport for suspension as per directions of the Supreme-Court appointed committee on road safety.
Police have also approached the court seeking maximum punishment for violators such as imprisonment and suspension of license.
In a drive conducted on September 1 last year, the police had registered 132 cases of drunken driving. On January 1, around 311 persons were booked for driving under the influence of alcohol. In the earlier month, too, around 315 people were booked.
