Pernem police prevented truckers affiliated to the Pernem Truck Owners Association from attempting to stop trucks arriving from Maharashtra with raw material for the Mopa International Airport.
The PTOA members have alleged that the Pernem police would never penalise overloaded trucks carrying material from Sindhudurg, but would fine truck operators up to Rs 63,000 if they were found overloaded.
Police objected to attempts by PTOA members to forcibly stop the trucks and suggested that they meet company officials instead.
The PTOA then met with Pernem Mamlatdar Anant Malik, airport company officials in the presence of Pernem PI Jivba Dalvi.
"We had asked authorities to ban overloaded trucks but there was no resolution to our grievances. Our trucks are being stopped at Maharashtra itself and are later taken to Kudal. We incur huge losses on diesel for that. We want a hike of Rs 300 per tonne,” said PTOA President Milind Shetye.
Former sarpanch Rupesh Parab claimed there was still no employment for locals despite the international airport being set up in Mopa.
