Formerly a Goa police officer, Indra Dev Shukla, IPS, is returning to Goa as Director General of Police (DGP) after over two decades of service in the IPS cadre outside the State.
On Wednesday, the Ministry of Home Affairs issued the order transferring Shukla to Goa as DGP and shifting the incumbent Mukesh Kumar Meena, IPS, back to Delhi.
Shukla was Special Commissioner of Police (Security) in Delhi.
The appointment comes months before Goa is slated to go to the polls which are due in February March next year and has raised some eyebrows within the ranks of the Opposition parties here who perennially complain during elections of misuse of the official machinery by
ruling parties.
Shukla is not unfamiliar with the Goa police set-up and has brushed shoulders with several of the officers currently in senior ranks of DySP and SP.
In his nearly two decades with the Goa police department in the 1980s and 1990s, Shukla, rose from the ranks and served as Police Inspector, Deputy Superintendent of Police and Superintendent of Police in crucial locations, including in the capital Panaji.
He was shifted out of the State on promotion to the Indian Police Service (IPS) cadre in the year 2000. He is due to retire next year, according to one senior police officer who had worked as his junior in the 1990s.
Change perception of Goa as destination for drugs: Meena
PANAJI: The outgoing DGP Mukesh Kumar Meena said on Wednesday the international perception of Goa as a destination for drugs needs to be changed. He said the police should strive to make the State drug-free.
