Goa Tamnar Transmission Project Ltd (GTTPL), the Vedanta-owned company building the controversial inter-state power transmission project near Mollem, has knocked the doors of the Supreme Court of India in a bid to tide over a hurdle which is preventing the conversion of the land at its project site in Sangod due to a 2015 order of the Apex Court itself.
The judgement bans conversion of land of over one hectare which has a tree canopy density of 10 per cent and more. In its plea before the Supreme Court, GTTPL has sought an exemption.
The controversial project is one of the three linear projects which cut through protected forests in Mollem National Park and the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary.
The plea for exemption has been filed in a PIL of an NGO and a group of five landowners challenging the expected felling of nearly 22,140 trees on private lands for the project.
