The Fatorda police on Tuesday cracked a whip against migrants involved in begging in and around the Old Market area, but the absence of logistics, including a beggars’ home or a shelter home forced the police to release around 12 females along with their children later in the evening.
In a coordinated action, the Fatorda police rounded up around seven males, 10 females along with their children with the hope that they would be transported to the beggars or the shelter homes as per the law.
After finding that the logistics were absent, the police had no option but to release the women beggars around 12 in number. Around 10 children were accompanying their parents when they were rounded up by the police.
Fatorda Police station in-charge, PI Kapil Nayak informed that the police have rounded up the families that were involved in begging around the Old Market area. “The police had received numerous complaints that a group of men and women along with their children were engaged in begging around the Old Market circle, causing a nuisance to the travellers, local residents and the shop owners,” he said.
Saying that the police rounded up these persons under the Beggars Act, PI Kapil said the police had no other option but to release them under personal bond later in the evening.
The police now plan to produce the seven males before the court for remand and further action.
Meanwhile, a resident of Borda, Alison Morenas, said today’s massive drive to clear the menace of beggars which created a nuisance in the Old Market heritage ward was conducted by Fatorda Police in coordination with Holy Spirit boys.
“Of late after observing continuous nuisance of begging with the beggars tally increasing day by day at the Old Market, especially after the Holy Spirit church vandalising incident, our youth decided to take proactive steps in tackling this issue with the help of authorities,” Alison said.
