Cops puzzled over Parrikar’s diktat to rein in criminals

History-sheeters from South district, beware! Be prepared to receive a ‘love letter’ from the men in khaki, as the district police seems to have taken seriously Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar’s fiat on the crackdown on anti-socials post-Merces incident.

Around 87 history-sheeters from across the district have  been identified by the men-in-uniform, with the commercial capital  topping the list of history-sheeters, with 25 known criminals to  be precise, and they will all receive summons to appear before their  respective police stations. What action the police intend to initiate  against the history-sheeters remains unknown, but sources revealed that the  police may issue them a stern warning if they continue to be involved in  anti-social activities.
The Goan understands that the police appears unclear as to what  action they can initiate against the history-sheeters when they were all  bound over just on the eve of the February 4 Assembly election. Police  officials in the know pointed out that since most of the  history-sheeters have been bound over before the Assembly election, they  find themselves in a tight spot as to what further action can be initiated  against the anti-socials since the bond has a validity of six months.
Meanwhile, statistics dished out by the district police  revealed that a total of 87 history-sheeters have been identified by the  police stations in the south Goa district. Of the total 87 history-sheeters, a whopping number of them hail from Salcete taluka, around 55  to be precise. While the Margao police station having jurisdiction over  Margao, Fatorda, Navelim, Aquem-Baixio, Dramapur-Sirlim villages top the  list with 25 history sheeters, Colva, Cuncolim and Maina Curtorim  police stations follow closely with 11, 10 and nine history-sheeters  respectively. Other police stations in South Goa which have a high  number of history-sheeters include Ponda (13), Verna (10) and Vasco  (8).
While the presence of history-sheeters in  the police station areas of South Goa is an admitted fact, especially in  Margao and Salcete, questions are often raised whether the  men-in-uniform have been pro-active in reigning in on the anti-socials,  with history-sheeters roaming around the city or throwing their weight  around in their respective areas of influence is an open secret.
