The Maina Curtorim police on Tuesday have instructed the Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd not to resume work at the Chandor-Guirdolim villages for another five days and to take up restoration work of water body buried by the ongoing work.
While welcoming the police action, agitated villagers, however, vowed to stop the work as and when the railways resume the work after a period of five days. The villagers have threatened to hold sit-ins at the place of work. They have also resolved to move the competent authority to stop the ongoing work at the site.
Maina Curtorim Police station in-charge, PI Sagar Ekoskar visited the Chandor-Guirdolim area where the villagers have been protesting against the land filling of a water body by the railways.
Accompanied by the villagers and the railway officials, PI Ekoskar inspected the sites of the sluice gates at both Chandor and Guirdolim to take stock of the situation.
After the inspection and after taking into account the sentiments of the villagers, PI Ekoskar told the RVNL officials not to resume work for the next five days. He also told the officials to ensure that the work does not end up in filling up the water body.
While the RVNL officials assured the police not to take up the work as per the PI’s instructions, the villagers have vowed to stop any further work at the site. PI Ekoskar explained to the villagers that he had intervened in the matter just to tell the railways not to resume work so as not to precipitate matters at the spot. He, however, said the police will have to provide police protection to the railways if they decide to resume work as per orders.
The villagers also charged the railways for using a NOC granted by the Guirdolim village Panchayat to carry out the work of land filling on the other side of the track.
Chairman of Guirdolim Bio-diversity Committee Agostinho Antao said the railways are also misguiding the police and the villagers by saying the RVNL has already sanctioned funds to the Water Resources department for the restoration of the sluice gate and water bodies. “We would like to make clear that the RVNL has sanctioned funds for the restoration of water bodies on the other side of the track and not at the spot where the railways are carrying out land filling of the water body,” he asserted.
Antao said the villagers of Chandor and Guirdolim will not allow the railways to resume work come what may after the expiry of the five days.
