Merciana Vas, wife of Cortalim MLA Anton Vas, filed her nomination to the ZP by-poll from Cortalim on Thursday.
Merciana Vas was accompanied by her husband Anton Vas, Cortalim Sarpanch Senia Pereira, Cortalim Dy Sarpanch Divya Raikar and other supporters.
She told reporters that it was a last moment decision after the supporters insisted that she contest the ZP by-poll and carry forward the works of her husband and Cortalim MLA Anton Vas.
“We already have a manifesto of which maximum works are complete and I will complete the remaining works. I have been deputy sarpanch in the past and I will try my best to complete the pending works and bring more development works in the constituency.”
“As far as the issue of double tracking of railways is there, I will support the villagers and not allow any projects against the wishes of the people,” said Vas.
Cortalim Sarpanch Senia Pereira said Anton Vas was not willing to have his wife contest the elections.
“We had a meeting two days ago and many people insisted that Merciana contest the elections. We had no one to contest and since we can’t afford to have a new face work at the grass roots, we insisted on Merciana and he agreed,” said Pereira.
Cortalim Dy Sarpanch Divya Raikar said Merciana would be in the best position to collaborate with her husband to get the works completed.
Social worker Roquezinho D’Souza said Cortalim MLA Anton Vas has many inspections with different departments and Merciana can also interact with them regarding her development works under ZP.
