Several houses in the Housing Board at New Vaddem got flooded following heavy rains in the port town on Monday.
Affected residents expressed serious concern after large amount of rainwater entered into the houses and many blamed the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) for failing to undertake pre-monsoon works which had led to the flooding incident.
The gutters were choked and water began rapidly entering into their houses.
While some residents tried to unsuccessfully build a mud bundh to stop water from entering into the houses, some others used buckets to throw out the accumulated water. Residents accused the local councillor of failing to clean gutters since the last three years and complained that no one had arrived to their aid after water entered their homes.
MMC Chief Officer Gaurish Shankhwalkar was informed about the incident and he immediately directed MMC staff to assist and clear the gutters.
The MMC staff and labourers went to the site and removed some blockages from the gutter, thereby clearing the water in the area. Residents have appealed to MMC Chairperson Nandadeep Raut to look into the matter and get pre-monsoon works done urgently. They have also requested the MMC to employ labourers to get the gutters cleaned in their ward.
