Ugly Goans, a group working to create awareness on a sustainable culture, cleaned up Kharewado beach on Sunday.
The group, which organises cleanliness drives by involving schools, colleges and the university, conducted the cleanliness drive at Kharewado beach on second consecutive Sunday.
The group members had earlier met Mormugao councillor Lavina D’Souza for assistance in providing trucks to carry the garbage collected during the cleanliness drive on the beach.
Impressed by the efforts of the group, D’Souza had also participated in one such cleanliness drive two weeks ago in which the group had collected two truckloads
of garbage.
D’Souza appreciated the efforts of the group and requested them to carry out another drive at Kharewado beach on Sunday.
D’Souza also took part in the cleanliness drive on Sunday and the group members carried out an extensive cleanliness drive, collecting two truckloads of garbage from the beach.
Kabir Naik, a member of Ugly Goans appealed to people to keep their surroundings clean.
“Due to lack of garbage disposal facilities, locals and fisherfolk in close proximity of Kharewado beach throw garbage on the sand. It is no longer a beach, but a dump yard,” said Naik.
“We need to take action as a community and make sure this doesn’t get from bad to worse. Ugly Goans has taken the initiative to transform this area back to its former glory.”
“The second drive took place on Sunday, where we joined hands with volunteers from the NSS unit of MES College. With the support of MMC councillor Lavina D’Souza, we had two trucks arranged and cleared all garbage from the beach,” Naik added.
