MARGAO
With a permanent solution to the Sonsodo imbroglio still elusive and the time running out to put an action plan in place, Margao Municipal councillors, cutting across political lines, made a fervent plea to the Municipal chairperson and Chief Officer to approach the High Powered Coordination Committee (HPCC) headed by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to resolve the waste issue.
The plea seeking the intervention of the Chief Minister and the government to address the burning waste issue plaguing the commercial capital was made at the special meeting of the Council chaired by acting Chairperson Tito Cardozo.
While demanding to know whether the civic body has any plan in place to tackle Sonsodo after September 30, councillors across political lines said the Chief Officer should immediately seek an appointment with the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to evolve a solution to the issue. Referring to reports on the willingness showed by the Solid Waste Management Corporation to find out a way for Sonsodo, councillors, cutting across political lines, pointed out that the civic body cannot go on making payments to Fomento on a daily basis for the treatment of waste when the latter has already terminated the Concession agreement.
When the Chief Officer replied saying that his office had written two letters to the government to call for a meeting of the HPCC to address the city’s burning waste issue, councillors in one voice maintained that writing letters will not suffice and the time has now come to call on the Chief Minister after seeking an appointment. Acting Chairperson Tito Cardozo concurred with the sentiments of the councillors saying there’s an urgent need to act fast without any delay as the City Fathers called upon the CO to work on a war footing.
