In a notification issued by the labour department, the government sanctioned the rechristening of the Department and State Directorate of Craftsmen
Training (SDCT) as Department and State Directorate of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (DSDE).
The decision comes following the State government’s move to make the department as the “nodal department entrusted with co-ordinating the important task of Skill India Campaign of the Central Government and to speedily implement various connected schemes in close co-ordination with all the State Government Departments as well as Private establishments involved in skill development.”
Currently the department through its Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs), introduced 57 trades including welder, electrician, computer operator and programming assistant, information and communication technology system maintenance.
The state-run ITIs are located at Siolim, Pernem, Vasco, Canacona, Sattari, Bicholim, Cacora, Margao, Mapusa, Panaji and Farmagudi.
Last year, the department had been allotted Rs 7,422.18 lakh, of which the department had utilised Rs 3,423.55 lakh. This year, however, the seven government ITIs were selected by the government of India to receive assistance from the World Bank.
Under the Skill Development Project of World Bank, seven government ITIs were selected for upgradation into Centre of Excellence (CoE) with World Bank assistance with a GOI:State ratio of 75:25. The upgradation will also include procurement of machinery and equipment for the ITIs, which is expected to cost Rs 854 lakh.
The notification issued on the change of names of the department will come into force immediately with the General Administration Department amending Rule 47 of the Business of the Government of Goa (Allocation) Rules 1987 under which the name change will be undertaken.
