Sao Jose de Areal has called for a probe by the authorities following the death of a crocodile and fish in a storm water nullah.
While the Forest Department has disposed of the crocodile carcass, villagers have demanded to know the exact cause behind the death.
Briefing the media, social activist Freddy Travasso said this is the second time in the last couple of years that fish mortality has taken place in the storm water nullah. Suspecting that effluents discharged from the illegal scrapyards could be the reason behind the death of crocodile and fish mortality, he has made an impassioned plea to the Goa State Pollution Control Board, Health department, district Collector, besides the village panchayat to inspect the site and test the water samples. “Besides the dead crocodile, we have come across fish mortality. We do not know the exact reason behind the mortality. It is high time that the GSPCB, Health, and the district authorities come and take the water samples for testing,” he demanded.
Freddy wondered why the police, panchayat and the district authorities are silent on the issue when they are aware of the illegal scrapyards operating in the village and contaminating the water bodies.
He demanded strict action by the GSPCB against the erring units responsible for contaminating the water resources.
