Utter neglect and apathy has turned Colva beach Children’s Play Zone into an eyesore and a danger zone.

The children’s play zone at the iconic Colva beach is fast deteriorating due to a complete lack of maintenance and upkeep. Once a vibrant attraction created under the Central Government’s beautification project about three years ago, the area now lies in a pitiable condition. A visit to the site revealed broken play equipment and crumbling structures. Stray dogs have taken over the play area, with several seen resting or playing on the damaged installations.

Lamenting the sorry state of affairs, Colva resident Roque Fernandes said the neglected condition of the children’s play zone reflects poorly on Colva beach as a whole.

“This is a favourite spot for children, yet the authorities seem to have turned a blind eye to its maintenance,” Fernandes said. “Just look at the overgrown bushes and wild vegetation. When children frequent this area, the authorities should ensure regular cleaning to prevent reptiles or other dangers,” he added.

Fernandes further warned that the deplorable state of the play zone tarnishes the image of Colva as one of Goa’s most iconic beaches. “The poor condition of the children’s area gives tourists the wrong impression of our world-famous beach,” he added. “Visitors and their children will leave with bitter memories instead of pleasant ones,” he added.

He also questioned whether the authorities were deliberately neglecting maintenance to justify floating a new tender for redevelopment. “During the Diwali vacation, there was a huge rush at Colva beach. Naturally, young children wanted to use the play area—but doing so poses a risk,” Fernandes said. “The authorities must step in immediately and restore the facility.”
