A team of young doctors led by Dr Sawani Hegde Surlakar, consultant gynecologist and obstetrician at Mother Care Hospital, performed a C-section on a young Covid-19 positive patient from Panaji and safely delivered the baby.
The newborn and the mother are doing well, it was learnt.
This was the woman’s first pregnancy and she was suffering from moderately severe Covid-19 pneumonia and persistent fever at the time of the surgery. She was admitted at Mother Care Hospital in Margao for Covid treatment.
Following the surgery on April 28, Dr Jeetendra and Dr Suhel Nagarsekar at Classic Hospital in Margao provided NICU support to the baby born at 35 weeks weighing 2.2 kg.
The emergency surgery was performed at the private hospital owing to the overdurbened facilities at Goa Medical College and Hospital in Bambolim.
Dr Hegde’s team included consultant gynecologist and obstetrician Dr Neeraj Borkar, consultant anesthetist Dr Kefas Quadros and OT assistant Tirthanaka Naik.
Consultant radiologist Dr Prasad Hegde performed a bedside ultrasound for detection of estimated birth weight of the baby and the patient was managed by consultant internal medicine Dr Aman Prabhugaonkar and consultant pulmonologist for Covid-19 Dr Jagruti Nadkarni.
