Cuncolim council gets back land after razing structures

More than half a decade after the civic body had acquired the land for an administrative complex, the Cuncolim Municipal Council on Thursday cleared all encroachments from the land in question to take possession of the acquired land.

The demolition squad of the Cuncolim civic body razed down the temporary structures erected on the acquired land and also seized items, including fruits and other goods as the workers went about the work in the presence of Chairperson Lavita Mascarenhas and Chief Officer Shankar Gaonkar.
There was no resistance from any quarters and the municipal squad went about the work without any obstruction or force.
Chief Officer Shankar Gaonkar told the media that the demolition was carried out at the site since the municipality had already acquired the land for an administrative complex. “We have seized all the goods from the acquired land and also razed down the structures to take possession of the land,” Gaonkar said.
Incidentally, Chairperson Lavita and Chief Officer Gaonkar achieved what their predecessors could not do during the last half a decade as previous attempts to get the land cleared of encroachments were foiled either by political interference or lack of political will.
