The Curchorem Block Congress on Tuesday criticised Power and Environment Minister Nilesh Cabral on the Coastal Zone Management Plan (CZMP) and power issues in the State.

Addressing a news conference in Curchorem, Block member Amit Patkar alleged that the stalemate on the CZMP was largely due to Cabral’s arrogance and pressure from the central BJP leadership.

“The CZMP damage will be irreparable and irreversible and the minister must protect the interests of Goa and Goans and respect the demands of social activists as well as locals, for whom the coastline and coastal lands are a source of livelihood and shelter,” said Patkar.

While commenting on power issues in the State, Patkar said a white paper on power was released by the ministry stating that Goa has surplus power.

“However a few weeks later, the power minister speaks of power shortage. The minister should come clear on his position as it appears vested interests are involved for this complete U-turn on the white paper.”

Patkar also raised queries about a mansion under construction close to the banks of River Mirabag at Curchorem.

“The environment minister should investigate this development and offer clarity to the people of Curchorem. Who is involved in this activity? Has the party concerned got necessary approvals? Is the Curchorem-Cacora Municipal Council aware of this activity? This are questions that need to be answered by authorities,” said Patkar.

Patkar also sought to question claims that Cabral, as the local MLA, has undertaken development in Curchorem.

“The Curchorem Primary Health Centre lacks in basic facilities and projects such as the swimming pool, bus stand and market complex are incomplete. Name a worthwhile project which is planned and completed during the tenure of Cabral,” challenged Patkar.

Others present at the news conference included Block Congress leaders Manohar Naik, Elton Fernandes, Manuel Clement, Denzil Fernandes, Juliana Lobo and Celina Mascarenhas.
