CURCHOREM
The proposed Solid Waste Management Plant (SWMP) at Cacora is finally set to take shape, with people from Curchorem and surrounding areas agreeing to the project at a public hearing in Cacora on Tuesday. Addressing the public meeting, convened for prior environmental clearance to the proposed project, Curchorem MLA assured that garbage collection would be restricted to the talukas of Sanguem, Quepem, Dharbandora and Canacona.
In addition, only 1-2 trucks from other places would be allowed to bring in garbage and this limit would not apply to Curchorem area.
"While garbage trucks from the municipality and panchayats in Curchorem constituency will be allowed to directly dump garbage at the plant, other panchayats and municipalities in the four talukas would have to set up garbage collect ion centres in their jurisdictions." "Garbage from these garbage collection centres will then by taken by trucks from the Solid Waste Management Authority or the company setting up the plant," Cabral added.
He informed that a similar plant in Saligao has advanced technology to treat garbage.
He then requested people to raise their hands if they extended their support to the SWMP and nearly all present at the site expressed their approval.
Later speaking to reporters, South Goa Additional Collector Johnson Fernandes, a moderator at the public hearing, said the people had sought details on the operating system and its costs and benefits, but had not raised environmental concerns.
Solid Waste Management Corporation MD Sanjith Rodrigues later told reporters that the SWMP was explained in detail to the people and was confident that people would support the project.
He informed that construction of the SWMP would begin on submission of minutes of the public hearing and on obtaining the Environment Clearance Certificate.
