Curchorem roads turn into perilous stretches

Truck gets stuck in trench at Xeldem

SANGUEM

For nearly three years, the roads of Curchorem have been transformed into perilous stretches due to continuous digging by contractors laying sewerage pipelines.

This ongoing work has rendered the roads in Curchorem virtual death traps, with no clear end in sight.

Despite the 15 May deadline for digging works and amid the onset of heavy showers, excavations in Curchorem remain a daily occurrence, leaving residents in the dark about when normality will return.

The numerous open trenches across the constituency pose a significant risk to citizens, particularly motorists, who face the constant danger of driving into these pits and becoming stranded, especially when heavy rains fill them with water.

On Thursday morning, a garbage truck at Ghanemorod-Xeldem got stuck in one such trench and required assistance from locals for its removal. The reduced road space due to the excavations makes navigation difficult, especially when encountering oncoming vehicles.

George D’Souza, a local from Ghanemorod-Xeldem, expressed the widespread frustration, stating that the uncontrolled and prolonged sewerage work has become a source of “mental harassment” for residents, highlighting a severe lack of oversight from the concerned authorities.
