While rainwater in other parts of the port town receded soon after the showers, the road near the Our Lady Of Candelaria school was flooded with plastic waste and silt that came gushing down from the Mangor slums blocking a nullah. As a result waste water spread across residential areas.
Speaking to The Goan, a resident Nazir Shaik said possibility of drain water overflowing had been brought to the notice of the local councillor. “We also reported the matter to MMC Chairperson Deepak Naik almost a month ago, but the council failed to clear the nullah and our fears of waste water flooding the roads came true on Wednesday,” said Shaik.
Another resident, L A Pedro, added, “We even informed the MMC Chairperson that if the council did not have enough labourers, the residents would employ some workers and clear the nullah.”
When brought to his notice about the overflowing waste water, Naik sent some labourers and temporarily cleared the nullah, while assuring to send some of them to the site on Thursday.
Later in the evening, Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida visited the area and assured to send a team of 15 labourers on Thursday and clear all the muck with the help of a JCB.
“I know MMC does not have enough labourers nor do they have sufficient funds, so I have arranged 15 labourers to clear the gutter at my expense,” said Almeida. “There are some cross drains which are blocked. I will clear these as well,” he added.
Despite the heavy rains, all civilian flights operated on schedule at Dabolim airport, sources told The Goan.
