After waging a sustained battle against the controversial housing project over the past year, residents of Maina in Curtorim village launched an indefinite dharna near the project site on Tuesday.
The residents said they had run from pillar to post, approaching the village panchayat, the Salcete BDO office and the Office of the Additional Director of Panchayats in their quest for justice, but in vain.
Briefing the media, local resident and Congress leader Moreno Rebello said the residents had adopted the novel approach of staging an indefinite dharna near the project site to protest against the panchayat’s failure to stop the housing project.
He said the panchayat had approved the project despite objections raised by residents on several issues, including water and power supply, road access, and sewage and garbage disposal. “We will not leave the site until the project is scrapped. The agitation is also intended to send a strong message to the village panchayat that the people of Curtorim will not allow any mega housing projects in the village,” Rebello said.
