In a major decision, the Curtorim gram sabha on Sunday resolved that the entire land admeasuring over 2 lakh sqmts housing the Leprosy hospital be conserved as a biodiversity hub.
The proposal to preserve the Leprosy hospital land belonging to Directorate of Health Services was mooted by the Chairman of the Curtorim bio-diversity board J Santan Rodrigues as the Committee was in receipt of a letter from the State Biodiversity Board to take a decision on the issue at the panchayat level.
Santan explained that the land in question is rich in bio-diversity and the same will be destroyed if the Health Services has its way in utilizing the area for construction of barracks or other projects.
He told the members that the bio-diversity committee had moved the state board to declare the area as a bio-diversity hub, but the Board has contended that decision should come from the local body.
Chaired by newly-elected Sarpanch Rui Menezes, gram sabha members also demanded that the panchayat seek clarification from the TCP on the confusion prevailing vis-Ã -vis implementation of RP-21.
Members also took objection to the proposed 25-meter Major District Road (MDR) passing through Curtorim market area.
Local Felix Dias sought to raise the issue of water park proposed in the village, but Sarpanch Menezes said no such proposal has come to the panchayat, adding that the panchayat would cross the bridge when it comes.
On the question of the Talak housing project, Sarpanch said that panchayat has granted permission based on the court order.
