The Panaji police headquarters old building is faced with danger as far as fire safety is concerned and needs urgent attention after the police department wrote to the GSIDC to repair the building several months back but has received no favourable response as yet.
“There are many wires which have dislocated from the original position and crossing over each other which increases the chance of short-circuit outside the cabins where DGP and IGP and other SP cabins are there.”
The fire audit by the Fire department has pointed out this and advised urgent repair of the same, said a senior fire official.
We have time and again reminding the concern officials to take fire safety precaution but many departments are neglecting the fire safety aspects, said the fire official.
Source from Police department however said that the department has already intimated GSIDC to repair the building which includes the change in wiring of the building.
But the fact is the GSIDC has not taken the issue seriously and there has been delay in repair of the building.
There are many incidents of fire in Goa. The government is however apathetic towards fire safety.
The Panaji police headquarters building is over hundred years old and has wood used for many extent.
The wiring in the building is quite old and the electric load on the current wire has been increased tremendously with many AC’s and other electric equipments which increases the chance of short circuit.
There are no fire extinguishers in the building and lives of hundreds of people working as well visiting the building are at stake.
The building premises has petrol pump and has tons of paper and documents stored in the building multiplying the risk. Even a minor short circuit can cause a catastrophic, said a concern citizen Mukundaraj Mudras.
Even there is government printing press in the complex with tons of paper, collector’s office with even more paper. The complex is like a ticking time bomb, he added.
