International media arrives in State to track case

Coming as it does not too long after the acquittal of the two accused in the Scarlett Keeling ‘murder’ case, the British media has latched onto the story drawing parallels and similarly questioning the seriousness of the police probe in the matter.

With the murder making waves back in the UK, coverage of the murder has been extensive with several papers flying correspondents down in a bid to closely track the case.
Leading the charge was the British tabloid The Mirror which noted that “a side of Goa which doesn’t feature in tourist brochures and in Instagram posts from travellers reared its head.”
“Goa, often seen as the country’s party district, is packed with Western tourists soaking up the unique Asian culture. But it’s also popular with Indian men who have often not come across the relaxed western culture which young backpacking women bring,” The Mirror notes adding that “at night (the state) takes on a more sinister tone.”
The Sunday Express on the other hand, sought to highlight an earlier report that the State witnesses one tourist dies every week -- not all of them murders but several of them unnatural including drownings and road accidents.
The Guardian, in an extensive report has brought to light that there have been 245 deaths of foreigners in just four of Goa’s ‘districts’ (police stations) -- Pernem, Anjuna, Mapusa and Canacona.
The papers also questioned the police investigation, quoting eyewitnesses who say that the crime scene was ‘trampled’ while others suggest that police often pass off those found floating in the waters as drownings and others as having fallen or accidental deaths.
The Irish Independent is, however, more toned down in its approach suggesting that most trips pass off safely.
