Davorlim grapples with garbage

The Davorlim panchayat is grappling with the problem of open waste and garbage dumping in the village close to the border of neighbouring village Rumdamol as attempts made by the panchayat to clear the site of the waste has come a cropper.

The panchayat believes that tons of waste from the neighbouring hutments and slums as well
as residential houses in the village finds its way at the open dumping site along the roadside.
Sarpanch Flancy Gomes pointed out that the panchayat had cleared the waste twice with the help of a dozer after the new body took office month and half ago, but waste has again found its way at the site.
"The panchayat collects the dry waste twice a week from the village. However, given that there
was accumulated waste at the road side here, the panchayat had engaged a dozer to get rid of the waste, but it has come back again," the Sarpanch stated.
While the accusing fingers are pointed at the local residents living in illegal structures, the residents in turn said that waste from outside the area also finds its way at the site.
"We cannot be blamed for the mess. Waste from outside the area is also being dumped here by
unscrupulous elements," a local resident said.
