People of Davorlim are anxiously looking forward to Water Resources Department (WRD) Minister Subhash Shirodkar translating into action the promise to spruce up the Davorlim spring, which once attracted people from far and wide to enjoy a bath due to the medicinal properties of the spring water.
Lying in a state of neglect and craving urgent attention for over half a decade now, the WRD Minister Shirodkar had promised to bring about a turnaround in the spring with a two-fold objective, one to restore the pristine glory of the spring and to ensure the waters are used for irrigation.
A visit to the spring on Monday revealed the bitter reality “ the entire area is turned into an eyesore, with a thick growth of vegetation and the stagnant water emitting a foul odour.
When The Goan called up Navleim MLA Ulhas Tuenkar to shed light on the spring, he said the WRD Minister has promised to take up beautification on priority. He, however, said the work could not be taken up due to the promotion of the WRD officials and the delay in the appointments.
“I have been constantly following up on the matter with the WRD department. The engineers have started the work of preparing estimates for the beautification. However, in the meantime, some of the engineers have been promoted and it has delayed the process,” he said.
Tuenkar, however, pointed out that he would ensure that the WRD take up the beautification work at the earliest so that the site can be a place for leisure for the residents and also help to irrigate the adjoining fields.
A foundation stone for the spring beautification revealed that the foundation stone was laid when local MLA Avertano Furtado was the Minister in the BJP-led government.
