State Commissioner for NRI affair Anthony D'Souza has been directed to personally monitor the situation emerging out of the death of 27-year-old Goan youth John Dias, who was shot dead in a Texan departmental store by an unknown shooter, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said on Thursday.
"The NRI Commissioner is personally monitoring the situation. We have asked him to render any required assistance to the deceased's family in Goa," Sawant said.
A CCTV grab of the youngster, a former goalkeeper from Chandor, being shot at close range by an unknown person at a departmental store where Dias was employed had gone viral. The incident occurred on Saturday, but the police authorities have been unable to trace the killer just yet.
Sawant said that the NRI Commission is in touch with Indian consular authorities in Texas, United States, to facilitate the return of Dias' mortal remains to the family at home in Goa.
"We will coordinate with the embassy there, and whatever help is required will be given," Sawant told reporters.
Speaking to reporters near Panaji, Sawant also ducked queries related to the recent increase in fuel prices after the recent elections.
"Let me take an oath (first), after that, we will see," Sawant said when asked to comment on the pan-India increase in the prices of diesel, petrol and LPG.
The Congress party's top leaders and workers staged a protest march in Panaji on Wednesday to demand a reduction in petrol, diesel and LPG prices.
