Trinamool Congress MP Luizinho Faleiro on Thursday raised the issue of destruction of rivers and ecology of Goa and assault on federalism during Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha.
Faleiro said the rivers, mostly originating from the Western Ghats and meeting the Arabian Sea, represent the lifeline of the people of Goa.
"There is widespread anger over the implementation of the Major Ports Authorities Act (MPAA), nationalisation of Goan rivers, implementation of three linear projects, double-tracking of railway lines, expansion of national highways and power transmission lines through the wildlife sanctuaries,” said Faleiro.
He said that Goa is a tourist destination and not a coal destination.
"The Goa government had informed the State Assembly on July 29, 2021, and have written to the Ministry of Ports Shipping and Waterways on June 17, 2021, to repeal the MPAA as it conflicts and usurps the Town And Country Act and ODP made that under Regional Plan, Goa Panchayati Raj Act, Goa Municipalities Act, Goa Land Revenue Code and Goa Land Development Code,” said Faleiro.
“The MPAA is a draconian law which is an assault on the federal structure of the country,” he added.
“I, therefore, join the people of Goa and the government of Goa in their demand to repeal the MPAA”, said Faleiro.
