VALPOI
Angry locals from Nagargao marched to the Valpoi police station on Friday to protest against the detention of 18 locals in connection with the death of a youth from the village.
The locals were furious after 18 locals were detained and taken to the Porvorim police station for questioning, and while 15 of them were later released, three others were detained till Friday night.
Shravan Devidas Barve (24) had been found dead in front of his house at Ambede-Nagargao on Tuesday morning, and the family’s suspicion of foul play was strengthened when an autopsy on the body revealed that the youth had died due to asphyxiation caused by forceful compression of the neck. According to locals, Valpoi police detained 18 persons on Friday morning and they were taken to Porvorim for questioning the entire day.
When the locals were not released till late evening, dozens of locals marched to the Valpoi police station to seek an explanation for the detention of 18 locals in Porvorim, instead of questioning them at the Valpoi police station itself.
Police later informed the locals that 15 persons had been released, but the locals warned that they would not leave the police station till all 18 persons were released from Porvorim.
