MARGAO
The body of the 75-year old woman from Mormugao, who passed away at Tirupati when she had gone to the pilgrim centre on the Dev Darshan pilgrimage, has been handed over to the relatives after a post mortem examination at the South Goa district hospital mortuary on Saturday, but the episode has left many a question unanswered when the body was brought to Goa without an autopsy and NOC from the Tirupati police.
Even as the Hospicio South Goa district in-charge of the Department of Forensic Medicine, Dr Madhu Ghodkirekar conducted the post mortem at the mortuary on Saturday morning, the Fatorda police have registered a zero case, with police station in-charge, PI Ditendra Naik saying the case will be transferred to the Tirupati police station for inquiry.
Sources at the South Goa district hospital informed that when the body of the 75-year old woman was brought to the mortuary on Friday evening, it was accompanied by a brought dead certificate from the hospital where the woman was admitted at Tirupati.
Doctors at the Hospicio mortuary are believed to have insisted on informing the local police since the body is not accompanied by a death certificate certifying the cause of death. Sources raised a host of questions how the body could cross the borders of as many as 3-4 states from Tirupati without NOC from the police or a death certificate before the ambulance from Tirupati reached the South Goa district hospital on Friday evening.
When contacted, Dr Madhu Ghodkirekar, in-charge, Department of Forensic Medicine, South Goa district hospital told The Goan that the post mortem examination revealed that the woman died of heart failure. He, however, pointed out that the doctors at the Hospicio mortuary had insisted on registering a Medico legal case since the body was not accompanied by any certificate certifying the cause of death. “The body was handed over to the relatives of the deceased after the post mortem examination on Saturday morning,” he said.
Officials of the Social Welfare Department including its Director Sandhya Kamat was not available for comments.
