Debate over cricket stadium resurfaces

PANAJI

The debate as to where the long-delayed exclusive-for-cricket international stadium envisaged by the BCCI-affiliated Goa Cricket Association (GCA) should come up, briefly resurfaced in the legislative assembly on Friday with Mayem MLA Premendra Shet rooting strongly for Maulinguem in Bicholim.

Shet raised the issue during the discussion on the demands for grants pertaining to the Sports department when he said that the site at Maulinguem, already purchased outright by GCA more than a decade ago, was most suited for the cricket stadium.

The GCA also has land it took possession of on a long lease in Dhargalim where it is also contemplating locating its stadium project, envisaged during the period when the cash-rich and scandal-ridden sports body was helmed by former deputy chief minister Dayanand Narvekar.

Shet argued that recently, the land at Maulinguem was inspected by a technical team including an architect and GCA officials, besides he and Bicholim MLA Chandrakant Shetye were also present.

"The report has indicated that the site is well suited to build the stadium and the work can begin soon," Shet said, adding that the government should cooperate and give the project an impetus.
