After being reprimanded by the High Court for not adhering to its directives to clear the construction waste dumped on the Panaji-Old Goa bypass road, the Merces panchayat authorities have swung into action and started clearing the same.
Fearing further reprimand, the authorities even cleared the waste from the area coming under the jurisdiction of the Chimbel panchayat.
However, the moot question remains whether this temporary action would completely solve the problem of dumping, which is done in the late night hours.
The stretch of the road which is particularly vulnerable for such type of activity is the one that starts from the Merces junction and leads right upto Chimbel junction. This stretch has no presence of human habitation
making things easier for the dumping of the construction waste.
In the past, many trucks have been caught and handed over to the police for dumping waste but the activity didn't stop.
