Stating that the State government is committed to a vibrant and prosperous Goa, Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar said, "We salute the courage of our liberators who freed us from foreign rule and the bondage of 450 years."
Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs, Tribal Welfare, Art & Culture and MLA of Canacona constituency, Tawadkar was speaking after unfurling the National Flag and inspecting the Guard of Honour given by the police at Canacona on the occasion of Goa Liberation Day.
"On this historic 64th anniversary, we salute the courage of our liberators and reaffirm our commitment to a vibrant and prosperous Goa," Tawadkar said.
Canacona Municipal Council chairperson Laxuman Pagui, Deputy Collector Prataprao Gaonkar and DySP Nilesh Rane were also present on the occasion, along with most of the government department taluka heads, staff, freedom fighters, students and people in general.
School students presented a march-past and salute to the Minister, besides cultural programmes of dances and patriotic songs.
Earlier, at Canacona Municipality, chairperson Pagui unfurled the National Flag and took the salute. Pagui, in his speech, said the municipality is constructing a new fish market at Chaudi by spending Rs two crores, while appealing to citizens in general to pay municipal taxes and rentals regularly to make the civic body self-reliant.
Goa Liberation Day was also celebrated in almost all schools, higher secondary schools and the college in Canacona with flag hoisting and patriotic programmes.
