A week following 'May Day' there is a dash of good news for the worker class -- the Goa government is set to revise the minimum wages rates which have reportedly remained stagnant for nearly six years.
Revenue Minister Atanasio (Babush) Monserrate on Thursday revealed that the minimum wages for skilled and unskilled workers will be increased.
“The decision will be taken in the next week. These minimum wage rates had not been revised for the past six years,” he said, adding that States like Delhi and Kerala had much higher slabs.
“We are not even at par with the Central government wages,” Monserrate lamented, adding that all the workers in the State will also be furnished I-D cards to help them seek benefits of at least seventeen schemes.
He said the work of designing and making the I-D smart cards will be assigned to the State-owned Goa Electronics Limited (GEL) which will work in tandem with the Labour department.
