In bid to decongest the Mapusa, the civic body plans to bring more areas under pay parking in town.
The Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) will be adding three new pay parking locations in the market such as Babaji Cold Drink area, opposite Aram Soda and from Union Pharmacy to Mapusa Urban Bank junction area.
The move will help to cut down on the number of illegal vehicles that are being parked on roads and also to generate revenue for the municipality.
MMC Chairperson Priya Mishal informed that the proposal was already passed by the council and the three areas were also recently notified as pay parking as per the council resolution.
“At the next meeting, the council will decide on the rate to be charged for the pay parking and soon tenders will be floated inviting bids,” Mishal said.
With so much traffic congestion in the main market area, finding a place for parking has been the biggest problem in town.
The civic body has also failed to identify parking slots within and at the outskirts of the town. People coming from other places especially for the popular Friday market were the worst sufferers.
MMC Vice Chairperson Viraj Phadke informed that people from surrounding villages came to Mapusa in private vehicles, park them in these open areas around the market and board a bus to travel to their workplaces.
“Once these areas are converted into pay parking, these people will be forced to stop bringing their private vehicles or find some other places. Importantly, citizens will have access to organized parking space on roads,” Phadke said.
He also said that the entire lane opposite the Aram Soda was used for parking by rent-a-bike owners who will have to either stop using the space or pay up.
