Guruprasad Pawaskar, State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, on Wednesday, said that a dedicated department for the disability sector that aims to empower persons with disabilities will start operating from April 1, 2024.
This Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities marks a significant move towards empowering people with disabilities in Goa. The State will be one of several in the nation to establish a distinct department to address the needs of the disabled, he informed.
“The responsibility of this department will be to oversee the welfare of people with disabilities and ensure the effective execution of various government programmes for PwDs. The department will also contribute to the creation of numerous PwD-specific policies in healthcare, education, employment, transportation, accessibility of public infrastructure, and rehabilitation,” explained Pawaskar.
