The South Goa District Road Safety Committee on Wednesday conducted a review on the delay in constructing the Margao KTC bus stand and the need for a flyover at the Comba-Margao railway level crossing for quick movement of vehicular traffic.

The committee also reviewed the construction of speed breakers, erection of signages and deliberated on setting up of road side police booths in the district. The meeting was also scheduled to discuss pedestrian crossing measures in a bid to bring down accident rate.

South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha, who chaired the meeting, said the estimate for flyover at the Comba level crossing is pegged at around Rs 30 crore and that he would discuss with the Konkan Railway officials as how to go about the work vis-à-vis funds.

On the KTC bus stand, the MP said the huge cost of construction, estimated over Rs 100 crore, he would discuss the matter with the state government.

On speed breakers, Sardinha said the meeting issued instructions to the PWD to ensure temporary measures near the rumblers to avoid accidents. “The PWD is bound to take permanent measures at speed breakers, but at least the engineers should put in place measures to alert riders of the rumblers ahead”, he said.

The meeting also reviewed the request of the traffic department to print pamphlets for distribution to the school students as part of road safety.

On the request to provide police booths along the highways, the MP said since it would involve huge cost, the traffic department is being told to prioritize the locations so that at least a few booths could come up in the immediate future.

On erection and installation of signages on the roads, Sardinha said the agencies have promised to tender the work so that the signages takes shape at the earliest.
