Cortalim MLA Anton Vas on Saturday stated that Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) are needed since many people had begun discharging sewage in the open and appealed to people to offer land so that STPs could be set up across all panchayats in Cortalim constituency
Vas was speaking after launching the work on the first STP of Cortalim constituency in the presence of Cortalim Sarpanch Senia Periera, Dy Sarpanch Divya Raikar, Panchayat Secretary Ankita Ghogale and others.
“We have launched the work on the STP at Kesarval where the people faced a lot of sewerage issues. Many people have been discharging sewage in the open and I gave them strict instructions not to do so and we finally launched the works of the STP here.”
“Work on the first STP of the Cortalim constituency is being taken at an estimated Rs 55 lakh and we want to have more such STPs across all the panchayats of the constituency, but we have an issue of land availability,” Said Vas.
“I appeal to the people to identify land for us so that we can have more STPs under the Swaccha Bharat mission. We want to have more STP plants and only need to identify the land for the STP plants,” said Vas.
Cortalim Sarpanch Senia Pereira said people faced sewerage issues for a long time because most areas are hard rock in Cortalim and cause issues to septic tanks.
“We want to blame the TCP department for having given so many permissions for multi-level dwelling areas without checking the feasibility of the sewage connection and we also request the health department to check for all aspects before giving the NOC,” said Pereira.
“Since last five years, people were helpless and discharged sewage in the open and we later had to take a resolution to disconnect water and light if sewage was discharged in the open.”
“Vas carried out an inspection and people gave affidavits that they will not discharge sewage in the open, with a request to restore their connection,” said Pereira.
Cortalim Dy Sarpanch Divya Raikar, Panchayat Secretary Ankita Ghogale and others also spoke on the occasion.
