After being prevented entry into the venue to meet Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai, Canacona Congress leaders waited till the governor ended his function and submitted a petition to him regarding the bad condition of the Margao-Canacona stretch of NH-66 outside the venue.
According to reports, a group led by Canacona Congress Block President Prahlay Bhagat reached the Shrishthal panchayat where Governor Pillai was scheduled to interact with three village sarpanchas and disburse financial assistance to dialysis patients.
The group was, however, stopped from entering the Shrishthal panchayat hall by Canacona police providing security cover to the governor's entourage.
“We were told by police that we are not allowed to enter the hall or even to attend the governor's programme,” said Bhagat.
“So, we waited outside till the governor finished his programme and came out. We submitted our memorandums and informed him how the government and its agencies are cheating and lying to the people of Canacona over the bad condition of NH-66 road from Margao to Gulem.”
“We told the governor how the people are suffering due to the bad conditions of the highway, which has not been attended for almost a year.”
“We also informed that despite following up the issue with different government agencies, including the Canacona MLA and top PWD and state bureaucrats, Canacona people are left to fend for themselves,” said Bhagat.
Others accompanying Bhagat included Cleston Viegas, Manesh Naik Gaonkar and Sandeep Gaonkar.
GPCC General Secretary Janardhan Bhandari, who was not part of the delegation to submit the memorandum, told reporters that the Governor had keenly listened to the woes in Canacona.
Incidentally, while the Congress group was disallowed inside the hall to submit a memorandum to the governor, three separate memorandums were handed over to the Governor during the programme by Shrishthal panch members Livia Sanju Naik and Rajesh Gaonkar, and Agonda panch Pramod Phaldessai.
