Even as Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao along with the Sarpanchas and panchas of Seraulim and Benaulim Panchayats handed over a memorandum to the district Collector, South Ajit Roy with a plea not to take up work on the western bypass without desilting the River Sal, the government assured the villagers that the desilting of the river Sal will be taken up only after the Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) study is completed by the National Institute of Oceanography.
A government representative further assured the MLA and the villagers that work on the western bypass will be stopped up to the Wholesale fish market road at Seraulim, adding that the government has appointed a consultant to carry out a feasibility study on the construction of the bypass on stilts along the 2.7 km stretch from Seraulim to the Varca road. After Churchill led a delegation of the Panchayat elected representatives to the district Collector, South, a joint meeting with the concerned villagers and a government official was held at Nuvem at the western bypass project site office later on Friday evening.
The government official assured the Benaulim MLA that his demand for desilting of the river Sal will be met only after the NIO gives the EIA report on desilting. The officials further assured the villager that land filing for the western bypass will be stopped up to the wholesale fish market road at Seraulim, adding that the government will take a final call on the construction of the bypass on stilts on the 2.7 km stretch from Seraulim to the Varca road at Benaulim
after the consultant submits its report.
