PORVORIM

Director of Education Nagraj Honnekeri has said development of state can be achieved through quality education, which is why the government is spending crores of rupees in the educational sector.

“The government offers all types of assistance to schools to enable them impart quality education to students. It is responsibility of teachers to ensure all round development of students and to achieve this, teachers should encourage students to take part in extra-curricular activities as well as district and state level competitions,” said Honnekeri.

He was speaking at Porvorim at a programme organised by the Directorate of Education in association with SCERT to felicitate three students who represented Goa at the first of its kind programme by ISRO - Young Scientist Program - YUVIKA 2019.

The three students felicitated were Brijali Dergunkar (Government High school, Tarmata, Bhile-Surla), Sanad Batigeri (Dr K G Hedgewar High school, Cujira) and Steve Nathan DeSa (The Rosary High school, Cujira).

He said letters were despatched to all schools in Goa, inviting students to participate in Young Scientist programme YIVIKA- 2019 by ISRO.

“However, only 73 schools responded. Most students recommended by their schools were those who had scored over 90% marks in academics. These students did not take part in extra-curicular activities nor had participated in the district, state or national level competitions.”

“Hence, those students were not considered during selection. Students who had scored good marks in academics as well as had excelled in curricular activities were selected to represent Goa in the Young Scientist programme by ISRO,” said Honnekeri.

Vice Principal of District Institute of Education and Training Devidas Kudav said 103 students from schools all over in India participated in the Young Scientist Programme which began on May 13 and ended on May 25.
