Over-stretched Hospicio has once again come out with impressive statistics, bettering previous records on the number of patients availing medical benefits, indicating that the over-150 year old hospital still remains the destination for the common man despite shortcomings and resource crunch.
With the long-delayed 500-bedded South Goa district hospital still under construction, and the work dragging for the last nine years, Hospicio turned out the saviour for the common man.
And, statistics speak for itself as lakhs of patients from South district and beyond availed benefits, notwithstanding that many an unfortunate patient had to undergo the trauma of sleeping on the floor, or women sharing beds to make good the shortage.
Strange it may seem, but true, the 230-bedded hospital attended to a whopping 3.12 lakh patients in
the OPD and the casualty in 2019, bettering the record of the previous year which stood at 3.03 lakh
patients.
Despite bed shortage, and shortcoming in the logistics, the admissions in the hospital crossed the
30,000-figue mark last year, with the total admissions pegged around 30,225 as against 29,333 during the corresponding period in 2018.
That’s not all. Deliveries hovered around 2,648 last year as compared to 2,691 in 2018, indicating that Hospicio carried out around 222 deliveries a month on an average, around seven deliveries every day.
Lab investigations figures also touched an all time high, with total lab investigations reported at Hospicio pegged at a whopping 4.80 lakh. Around 43,891 X-rays, USG & CT-scan were performed during the same period last year.
Hospicio doctors and surgeons performed a total of 5,783 operations last year, around 481 operations every month. That operations have been on the rise at Hospicio is evident by the fact the total number of operations at the hospital were pegged at 5183 and 5339 in 2017 and 2018 respectively.
ECGs too showed a rise last year, with the number of ECG performed put at at 13,641 compared to 10975 a year ago.
Incidentally, the death rate has come down last year compared to 2018. If Hospicio had recorded 383 deaths in 2018, there was a marginal decline in the deaths, with the number pegged at 371 last year.
