Traffic started plying on the under-construction stretch of the western bypass between the Varca road and the Sirvodem road, with the PWD, National Highway taking no preventive measures to stop traffic along the road.

Even as work on the culvert at the river Sal is still underway near the recently-built road linking Benaulim at the Varca road, traffic was seen plying on the incomplete road, with local residents raising questions whether motorists would be covered under insurance in case of any untoward accident.

Unlike the Verna-Nuvem stretch of the western bypass, which has been tarred at the major stretch by the National highway and has started playing host to vehicles, the Benaulim-Navelim stretch is incomplete at many stretches, but vehicles have started plying right under the nose of the authorities.

When The Goan called up PWD, Executive Engineer, National Highway, Laxmikant Naik to shed light on the movement of traffic here, he said he would find out from his engineers the status of the traffic plying on the bypass.

He, however, could not shed light on whether any prior notification is required to throw any road for traffic and whether motorists will be entitled to claim insurance in the event of any accident.

Naik said he would ask the contractor to block movement of traffic on the under-construction bypass at the Benaulim-Navelim stretch since the bypass remains incomplete till date.
