The Margao Municipal Council has finally cleared the e-waste lying in the municipal building passage, but instead of disposing the waste to the designated contractors, the civic body has preferred to store the waste at the old market garage.
MMC workers shifted the e-waste, consisting of PCUs, keyboards, monitors, mouse and other computer items, which was found lying dumped in the building passage over the last several months.
If the e-waste could not be disposed till date for want of any inventory of the equipments, the same problem has raised its ugly head again, as a result of which the civic body decided to store the e-waste at the old market garbage.
Sources in the know informed that the e-waste was lying in the building passage adjoining the chamber of the Municipal Chairperson Pooja Naik due to delay in a decision on disposal of waste.
The stalemate over the e-waste surfaced after municipal officials realized that most of the computer items were supplied by the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA), raising questions whether the civic body is empowered to dispose off the waste not belonging to it.
“It’s this stalemate that had prompted civic body to keep in abeyance the proposal to dispose off the e-waste’, an official in the know informed, while saying that it’s still unclear when the civic body will be in a position to dispose of the waste.
Meanwhile, MMC Chief Officer Ajit Panchwadkar said that the ongoing clean-up operation in the civic body is being taken up to maintain the building clean and free from waste.
He said concerned officials were given a clear brief by him to clear all the waste, including the e-waste, broken chairs and furniture, besides stationary lying dump all round the passage of the municipal building following last month’s inspection carried out by him along
with Naik.
