The Water Resources department (WRD) has asked the chief officer of the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) to provide details of shop owners of the chicken market, as it plans to initiate action regarding illegal sinking of bore wells in the market premises.
In a letter to the chief officer, Rajan Kamble, executive engineer and ground water officer of WRD, said acting on a complaint from the NGO ‘Niz Goenkar Fauz’, WRD officials had conducted a site inspection of the chicken and mutton market on July 29.
"It is observed that 15 illegal bore wells have been illegally sunk near the chicken/mutton shops in the jurisdiction of MMC. It is mandatory to obtain permission of the ground water officer before sinking of bore well.”
Kamble has sought requisite details from the chief officer regarding allotted shop owners with full address. to initiate necessary action under Section 4 of the Ground Water Act for illegal sinking of bore wells.
The NGO Niz Goenkar Fauz had carried out a joint inspection with various government departments like health, legal metrology and FDA in the Vasco chicken and mutton market and claimed that many vendors did not have valid approvals, a claim which was later refuted by the vendors of chicken market.
The NGO had conducted another visit to the chicken and mutton market with the WRD department and pointed out the presence of several bore wells in the market premises.
