Difficult to restore power lines in heavy downpour: Cabral

Power minister Nilesh Cabral on Tuesday said that the people have to bear the electricity problem due to heavy rainfall and stormy winds adding that the problem will be solved in the future as the department is planning do phase wise underground cabling of 11 KV electric lines.   

The people of Goa have been facing problems of frequent electricity failure during the monsoon. 

Marcaim MLA Sudin Dhavalikar raised this issue through a calling attention motion in the ongoing Assembly session and demanded a systemic long term solution on this.   

Porvorim MLA Rohan Khunte pointed out that there is shortage of staff in the electricity department.   

While replying, Cabral said that the frequency with which breakdown in wires and transformers is happening, it is practically difficult to restore electricity at all places on the same day due to heavy downpour.   

“There are limitations to the kind of labour that can be done in the rain,” said Cabral.   

He urged the people of Goa to understand the situation and appealed to them to set up solar units which are provided under subsidized rates by the “government.   

Prasad Gaonkar, MLA from remote Sanguem constituency, pointed out that there is almost no electricity for the last one week in his constituency. He demanded teams comprising of five officials for repair work in these areas comprising of dense jungles.
