Dinesh Rao hints at Cong setup overhaul in State

PANAJI

Dinesh Gundu Rao, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge of party affairs in Goa held a virtual meeting on Wednesday and told local leaders that an overhaul of the State unit is on the cards.

Goa is headed to the polls along with three other States including Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand in early 2022, most likely in February-March.

Rao himself is expected to visit Goa next week and hold extensive review of the party organisation right from the block level upwards and then reshuffle the organisational committees at various levels.

Opposition Leader Digambar Kamat, GPCC chief Girish Chodankar, former Union minister Ramakant Khalap who heads the State Co-ordination Committee and his co-Chair Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco, besides South Goa MP, Francisco Sardinha and other leaders participated in the virtual meeting with Rao on Wednesday.

According to Kamat, Rao has asked all the five party MLAs, the MP and GPCC office bearers to get into the field and connect with people.

"He said the party organisation right from the block, district and state level will be reconstituted after review and feedback from all the 40 blocks," Kamat quoted Rao as telling the virtual meeting.

Performance of the party's office bearers will be assessed and only active ones will be renominated/promoted in the organisation and others will be assigned other party tasks, according to Kamat.

The Congress party, which dominated Goa's political landscape for close to three decades since 1980, has not tasted power since its comprehensive loss in the 2012 general election.

Kamat said Gundu Rao is likely to be in Goa next week when he will visit all the 40 assembly segments to conduct the assessment of the party organisation based on which the new party setup will be put in place to fight 2022.
